Why support OLIve?
OLIve Budapest has offered free university-style education for people who have experienced displacement, including refugees, since 2016.
We need funds to renovate our new home!
The first decade of OLIve’s existence was eventful, thanks to politics big and small, but we are proud to have welcomed over 1500 students who studied a range of academic, skills-based and artistic courses.
We can’t predict what the next decade will mean when it comes to the welcoming of displaced people in Hungary and Europe, but we do know that education is a wondrous, unpredictable and life-changing thing. It allows people to think beyond whatever categories are placed on them, to reimagine their place in society, and develop the skills and confidence needed to set their own terms of inclusion.
The Project
We used to be based at Central European University, but were removed from our home in 2023. Now, thanks to the support of Budapest’s VIII district government, we have a space of our own.
This is an amazing opportunity for us to not only teach on the weekend, but also hold classes during the week; run workshops by our alumni and teachers for the local community; host exhibitions; have public lectures in English and Hungarian; become a hub for research on displacement and education; facilitate book clubs and film clubs; build a small library; and imagine education otherwise. In sum, become a hub for critical, creative, inclusive adult education.
Or that’s the dream. But to make the dream a reality we need to do a bit of renovation.
Specifically: knock down a wall, move a sink, build a wall, remove wall coverings, move a water pipe, get a new boiler, remove clamps, replace window panes, get basic kitchen equipment, and paint all the walls.
We have an amazing group of volunteers (students, teachers, alumni, organisers, supporters) who will be working throughout summer.
However, we need funds to pay for:
A false wall to create an extra classroom
A door to fit in this wall
Paint
Brushes
New windowpanes
Basic kitchen (fridge, microwave, kettle)
A boiler
Easily movable tables
Pollyfiller
A plumber
If you’re able to donate money to help fund this we would be amazingly, amazingly, amazingly grateful.
We have also included the option to be a regular monthly supporter for OLIve. This is the best way for you to support our work. It allows us to spend money on education that is not tied to a specific grant.
